The LSU Tigers football season is inching closer, now down to double digits on the countdown clock. Kickoff against the Clemson Tigers is now just 81 days away.
As we continue to look back at the history of the Bayou Bandits to celebrate and prepare heading into the first game, there is also the matter of getting to know the current-day players.
Given that no one on this year's team is wearing it, here is a look at the past of No. 79 at LSU:
Highlighting Former Players Who Wore No. 79
C DJ Chester (2023-2025)
Chester is a more recent player and is still active, now playing for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. He originally signed with the Tigers out of high school back in 2023 as a superstar prospect. He was a near Top-50 recruit in the country and had high expectations in Baton Rouge.
The Georgia native had a ton of potential, but has always been a fairly raw talent. He played a ton as a sophomore in 2024, though the results weren't always great. He is a better pass blocker, though, and was able to contribute to that season's dominant offense. He lost his role in 2025 and saw much less consistent snaps, so it's no surprise that he transferred out as part of the mass exodus when LSU made its coaching change.
C Lloyd Cushenberry III (2016-2019)
Cushenberry is one of the best centers in school history and earned his spot in the history books by playing one of the most important positions on the 2019 squad, one of the best teams in the sport's history. That offensive line won the Joe Moore Award and pretty much everyone got drafted.
As for Cushenberry, he was taken in the third round by the Denver Broncos. He spent the last two seasons with the Tennessee Titans and signed with the Buffalo Bills this offseason, where he projects more as a depth piece than a starter.
A Play That Went For 79 Yards
DJ Chark's First Career Touch Goes 79 Yards For Touchdown In 2015 Texas Bowl vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders
Not the first time that Chark has been included on this list, but this highlight was too much not to share. Still just a young former three-star recruit hoping to make the most out of his chance, Chark took his first career touch 79 yards off of an end-around in the 2015 Texas Bowl.
