Court ruling favors former NFL players returning to college

Clemsonfootball’s season opener at LSU picked up another late twist less than 48 hours before kickoff.

A Louisiana judge granted an injunction Thursday that opens the door for LSU to add tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive lineman Zxavian Harris, two former Ole Miss players who spent time with NFL teams this preseason.

For Clemson, Wright is the more immediate concern. LSU coach Lane Kiffin said the tight end has already been practicing with the Tigers, making him eligible to play Saturday night in Baton Rouge. Harris, meanwhile, is not expected to be available because of the NCAA’s five-day acclimation requirement.

Wright caught 66 passes for 1,029 yards and nine touchdowns over two seasons at Ole Miss. He went undrafted in April before spending time with Philadelphia and Cleveland.

Harris also went undrafted before signing with New Orleans. The 6-foot-8, 335-pound defensive lineman started all 15 games for Ole Miss last season and finished with 58 tackles, nine tackles for loss and three sacks.

The legal fight is not finished. The SEC is expected to appeal the Louisiana ruling and separately filed suit Thursday against Kiffin, LSU and other university representatives in Alabama federal court.

Dabo Swinney made his frustration with the situation clear earlier this week.

“It’s embarrassing. I mean, it really is; we have no rules, there’s no governance,” Swinney said. “I mean, it’s a joke; there are zero rules.”

No. 11 LSU hosts Clemson on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on ABC.
