With training camp right around the corner, the Dallas Cowboys are hoping to maintain their offensive prowess, while the defense must take a big step in improvement for next season. Although the offense is deemed the best part of the team, the organization just hired a former Carolina Panthers quarterback to join the coaching staff.

Reports indicate that Will Grier, who played two games for the Panthers in the 2019-20 season, is signing on with the Cowboys as an offensive assistant, according to Todd Archer of ESPN. Grier finds a coaching gig just nine days after retiring as a quarterback in the NFL.

“Former QB Will Grier is joining the Cowboys coaching staff as an offensive assistant, according to a source,” Archer reported. “Grier retired on July 15 after signing with Carolina before the draft. Before joining the Panthers, he contemplated joining the Cowboys coaching staff earlier in offseason.”

This will actually be Grier’s third stint with the Cowboys. He initially signed with the club in the 2021-22 season, going back and forth from the practice squad and the active roster. He joined Dallas again in the 2024-25 campaign, but remained on the practice squad throughout that year. He never played an official game in either season with the team.

After a roller coaster of a playing career, Grier gets his first shot at coaching on Brian Schottenheimer’s coaching staff. Considering his playing days, the former West Virginia Mountaineers star will assist with the quarterback room, working with Dak Prescott, Joe Milton III, and Sam Howell.
