Dabo Swinney 'Extremely Disappointed' After Suspending Clemson Star Vic Burley

With just two weeks before their highly-anticipated season opener against LSU, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has found himself in the frustrating position of having to suspend one of his key players for the coming season.

On Saturday, Swinney announced that Tigers defensive tackle Vic Burley has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested for disorderly conduct by university police this morning. In a statement, Swinney said he was “extremely disappointed” by Burley’s actions.

“Earlier today, I was made aware of defensive tackle Vic Burley’s arrest by the Clemson University Police Department for disorderly conduct early Saturday morning. I have made the decision to suspend Vic from our football team indefinitely. We are extremely disappointed by his actions and decisions,” Swinney said.

There wasn’t a whole lot of sympathy to be found for Burley. Many fans on X have criticized him for allowing himself to act that way in public, while others are already moving on and wondering who will fill his spot in the lineup.

“Bro’s going to leave Clemson as a top recruit with high expectations that didn’t even come close to making an impact. woof,” one user remarked.

“Cut him and get one of those 5th year transfers like LSU did. Hell, offer the kid from Notre Dame that LSU just signed. There’s no rules anymore,” another suggested.

“Why is he out at that time? Isnt he injured? Shouldn’t he be prepping for oh I don’t know LSU, or focus on that word called AVAILABILITY. Get rid of him, take your losses and focus on ‘27 and the nightmare that is going to be,” a third wrote.

What now?

Coming out of high school in 2023, Burley was seen as a four- or five-star prospect by many scouts. Some even gave him a potential first round NFL Draft grade. But over the last two seasons at Clemson, he really hasn’t done much to show the incredible potential that people saw in him.

He has 15 tackles, half a tackle for loss and one pass defended in 21 games over the past two seasons.

2026 was supposed to be Burley’s breakout year on a Clemson team that sorely needs players at every position to step up.

Instead, fans are wondering whether Burley might go down as a total disappointment for them.
