Dabo Swinney has unique take about conference games

Clemson is coming off a big win over North Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 19.

Dabo Swinney’s program trailed by two scores in the first half before coming back to win 28-20. A long weather delay during the game appeared to help Clemson.

Swinney is off the hot seat, at least for now, heading into Friday’s game against California.

He spoke to the media Tuesday, Sept. 22, and was asked about a canceled series against Georgia. He wishes it were still on the schedule and there were fewer conference games.

“I hate it, because I just think it’s great for fans, and I get it,” Swinney said, via Nick Coppola of The Greenville News. “We’ve been playing 10 [Power Four opponents] forever around here, but going to nine conference games, a lot of these leagues are going. I wish it was less. I wish everybody played seven conference games, and then you had more crossover games all throughout college football, but it is what it is.”

Seven conference games allow for more non-conference games. Heck, even the Power Four conferences want their teams playing each other more often.

If Swinney had his way, we’d potentially see more top non-conference games during the first month of the season before getting into conference play.

However, more and more Power Four teams are playing nine conference games a season, so Swinney is unlikely to get his wish.
