Dabo Swinney says son Drew Swinney leaving Clemson to be Samford receivers coach

CLEMSON — Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney said his middle son, Drew Swinney, will leave the Tigers to be the wide receivers coach at Samford.
“I’m excited for Drew and just gonna be a great next step for him,” Dabo Swinney said on Dec. 15. “Pretty cool his first job to go run the room is in Birmingham.”
Drew Swinney, 25, is Dabo Swinney’s first child to leave Clemson for another coaching job. Drew Swinney will follow Clemson senior offensive assistant/assistant quarterbacks coach John Grass, who Samford hired as its coach on Dec. 3.
Drew Swinney was on Clemson’s staff for three seasons, working as a graduate assistant in 2023 and 2024 before being promoted to offensive player development and assistant wide receivers coach roles this year.
He was a wide receiver at Clemson from 2018-22, recording 14 caches for 96 yards, and serving as the team’s holder on field goals in his final season.
“I know he’s my son, but he’s a stud. He’s ready,” Dabo Swinney said..
Drew Swinney’s older brother, Will, is an offensive player development/assistant tight ends coach with the Tigers. Their youngest brother, Clay, is in his fourth season as a wide receiver and holder at Clemson.
Grass, 57, became Samford’s 37th coach in program history after joining Clemson in 2022 in an off-field capacity. He served as a special assistant to the offense in the 2022-23 seasons before becoming a senior offensive assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach in 2024.
Grass is expected to hire more Clemson staffers.
