Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney saw his Tigers fall to a disappointing 3-5 on Saturday in a 46-45 home loss to Duke.
During the first half, the Tigers defense struggled mightily and surrendered 28 first-half point to the visitors. Instead of Swinney trying to rally his guys to meet the moment, the ESPN broadcast caught him berating his defensive players for their lackluster performance. It wasn’t just fiery coaching; he seemed to take his anger out on them.

As Clemson only has four games left on the schedule, a bowl game isn’t a guarantee and the possibility of a losing record looms large. Swinney blowing up on his players just isn’t a great look in the midst of a down year. As it looks less and less likely that he returns to Death Valley in 2026, a lowlight like this won’t help his case to stay.

The 2026 college coaching carousel being as populated with big gigs could make Clemson hesitant to part ways with Swinney if it doesn’t like its place in the pecking order of possible openings.
However, if you’re Clemson, the best Swinney years might be behind you. Separation might be the only way for the program to find its footing again in the ever-changing landscape of college football.
