Dabo Swinney was once one of college football's best coaches, but the changing nature of the sport has left him behind.

Clemson disappointed last season with just seven wins, putting the Tigers' head coach firmly in the hot seat. If Swinney can't turn the Clemson program around, the school may decide it needs a coach more willing to operate in the new age of college football.

Swinney is still one of the highest-paid coaches in the country, so it would be an expensive decision for Clemson to move on from him. Swinney's buyout details were meant to prevent other schools from hiring the coach away, and now it could impact whether Clemson actually wants to hire a new coach.

Dabo Swinney contract details

Swinney is currently on a 10-year, $115 million deal that he first signed before the 2022 season, which ties him to Clemson through 2031.

According to USA Today Sports, Swinney is currently the fourth-highest-paid coach in college football, with an average annual salary of over $11.4 million, trailing Kirby Smart, Ryan Day and Lincoln Riley.

When Swinney signed this contract, he was coming off of 11-straight 10-win seasons that included six College Football Playoff appearances and two national championships. 

Swinney's contract includes bonuses for how far Clemson makes it in a particular season, from making the conference championship game all the way to winning the National Championship. He also has bonus opportunities for winning the ACC Coach of the Year and the national coach of the year.

Dabo Swinney buyout details

If Clemson fires Swinney before the calendar turns to 2027, the team will have to pay a $57 million buyout, per USA Today Sports. Once January 1, 2027 hits, Clemson would owe Swinney "the sum of the remaining base salary and supplemental compensation that would otherwise have been due."

Therefore, Clemson would have to be ok paying Swinney a large sum of money if the program wants to hire a new head coach to replace him. Swinney's success at Clemson gave him a ton of leverage during negotiations, as Clemson didn't expect to need the buyout clause anytime soon.

Swinney's contract also includes a buyout structure that would make it more expensive for him to leave Clemson for Alabama, where he grew up and went to school.

Dabo Swinney coaching record

Swinney has been Clemson's head coach since 2008, making him one of the longest-tenured coaches in the country. Entering the 2026 season, Swinney had produced a record of 187-53 in 240 games with the Tigers, which comes out to a .779 winning percentage.

Additionally, Swinney has never missed a bowl game in his time with Clemson, as he has only had a losing season once in his first 18 seasons. He's also made the College Football Playoff seven times, including four National Championship games and winning the National Championship twice.
