Dabo Swinney's Clemson QB Strategy is Beyond Bizarre

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney finally revealed his starting quarterback on Tuesday, and to no one's surprise, it was Christopher Vizzina.

Vizzina is entering his redshirt junior campaign and made one start last year, going 29-for-43 with 313 yards and three touchdowns in a loss to SMU.

Otherwise, Vizzina has very limited experience, but the former four-star recruit has long been tabbed as the successor to Cade Klubnik. So here he is.

The 21-year-old will be under center against LSU this Saturday, but even though Vizzina is starting, Swinney has stated that freshman Tait Reynolds, who was Vizzina's only competition for the job, will also see the field in Baton Rouge.

“I’m not going to guarantee that he’s going to play, but I would say it’s probably likely,” Swinney said. “Because we have to continue the competition, and go from there.”

Continue the competition? As if it didn't end before the season opener?

Vizzina certainly outplayed Reynolds in fall camp, which should not come as much of a shock given Reynolds' lack of experience. Swinney clearly likes Reynolds, but the youngster does not appear ready yet.

And if Swinney continues pitting the two signal-callers against one another during meaningful games, it could have a very harmful effect on the team.

That's where we need to give Alabama's Kalen DeBoer credit: he refused to even entertain the idea of a two-quarterback system throughout the summer battle between Keelon Russell and Austin Mack. Russell won the job, so he will be the starter.

That should be the case at Clemson unless Vizzina proves otherwise.

Vizzina should get the opportunity to prove that he is the No. 1 guy moving forward. He shouldn't have to worry about Reynolds outplaying him on the very same day.

Now, if Vizzina comes out and lays an egg against LSU, that's another story. But if he is at least adequate? There is no reason why Reynolds should be seeing the field unless he is being used as a decoy.

We'll see how Swinney actually decides to approach the situation this weekend, but playing both quarterbacks could end up being a dreadful mistake.
