The LSU football team is a step closer to adding a controversial player to the roster. Tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who played this summer with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, has cleared NFL waivers. That means Wright is set to join the LSU football roster, in an unprecedented move.
“Source: Former Browns TE Dae’Quan Wright cleared waivers today and is expected to sign with LSU on Wednesday. Wright will go from Cleveland Brown to LSU Tiger, and become the first player to go from an NFL roster back to college,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted to X, formerly Twitter.
Wright played in college for two seasons at Ole Miss, under current LSU head football coach Lane Kiffin. Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU near the end of the 2025 college football season.

Unless something awfully strange happens, Wright will be back on a college roster very soon. He could even be able to play for the LSU football team in their September 5 opener against Clemson.
“Man, isn’t this s— crazy?” Browns head coach Todd Monken said when asked about Wright’s situation, per ESPN. “I don’t even know what to say.
“I wondered why Lane Kiffin reached out to me a week ago; now I know. I didn’t call him back. I guess I should have.”
Kiffin has defended the decision to bring in a former NFL player.
“They’re available to recruit. So, ourselves, like many places around the country, are recruiting them,” Kiffin said, per the Associated Press.
After it was announced that Wright wanted to return to college, the other power 4 conferences discussed moves to bar NFL players from returning and playing for their schools. Those conferences are the ACC, Big 12 and Big Ten. The SEC is also looking into Wright’s situation.
The Big Ten officially voted on Tuesday to bar NFL players from returning to play for schools in that league. Time will tell if those other conferences follow through.
