Nearly three decades after their groundbreaking sketch series ended, the comedians are teaming up again on NBC.
Damon Wayans and David Alan Grier are sharing the screen again, nearly three decades after their time together on “In Living Color.” Wayans is set to guest star in the Season 3 premiere of NBC’s “St. Denis Medical,” reuniting two performers whose work helped define an important era of Black comedy on television.
Wayans will appear as Dr. Highland in the Season 3 premiere, playing a charming but pompous physician who temporarily fills in while David Alan Grier’s character, Ron, recovers from surgery. According to Variety, the episode is scheduled to air November 2. Grier was part of the “In Living Color” cast throughout the show’s five-season run from 1990 to 1994. Wayans starred during the show’s first three seasons and later returned in a recurring capacity.
Their reunion also highlights the longevity of the performers’ careers beyond the sketch series. Wayans went on to headline “My Wife and Kids” and later starred in Fox’s “Lethal Weapon,” along with a litany of films, while Grier has built a career across television, film, theater and comedy. “St. Denis Medical” follows doctors and nurses working inside an underfunded and understaffed Oregon hospital. The comedy stars Allison Tolman, Grier, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Josh Lawson, Kahyun Kim, Mekki Leeper and Kaliko Kauahi.
The reunion offers a new generation of viewers an opportunity to see two performers whose ‘In Living Color’ work helped establish Black comedy as a major force on mainstream television.
