In the aftermath of Oregon's surprising loss to Oklahoma State on Saturday, Ducks head coach Dan Lanning put the blame on himself. Lanning said his team experienced a "lack of leadership" to start the season and "that begins with me," per ESPN.
Lanning made those comments Monday while reflecting on the 39-31 loss. He also took himself to task for a controversial decision to go for it on fourth down on his team's own 33-yard line in the fourth quarter. Oregon failed to convert on the play, essentially sealing the win for Oklahoma State.
Lanning said that was the "wrong decision on my part."
The loss dropped Oregon from No. 6 to No. 21 in the AP rankings. It doesn't necessarily eliminate Oregon from playoff contention, but the team has its work cut out for it the rest of the way.
A lot of that work — at least in the short term — is going to focus on the offensive line and quarterback Dante Moore. Following the upset, Oklahoma State linebacker Tate Romney said the team spotted tells among the Oregon offensive line while watching film. That allowed Oklahoma State to determine whether Oregon would run or pass on each play, a massive advantage.
Moore's stance also came into question, as some believed the way he lined up also tipped off the defense as to whether a run or pass was coming. Lanning hinted at as much Monday, saying the team would police and improve that, per ESPN.
It was a modest game for Moore, who finished just 14 of 29 for 191 yards. He threw two touchdowns and was sacked four times in the loss. After the game, Moore did not meet with the media, though Lanning said it was because the quarterback needed multiple IVs after the contest.
Oregon won't have much time to get things turned around. After taking on Portland State on Friday, the Beavers will travel to take on No. 12 USC in Week 4.
