Alabama fans throw objects toward Georgia players
Video shared by ESPN showed objects being thrown from the stands in the direction of Georgia players as they made their way through the postgame scene. The incident quickly drew attention because of the potential danger created when fans throw items toward athletes.
Georgia had just secured one of its biggest wins of the season, overcoming Alabama in a game that came down to the final minutes. The Bulldogs entered the matchup ranked No. 2 nationally and handed the No. 6 Crimson Tide a 20-17 defeat in Tuscaloosa.
The rivalry has produced plenty of heated moments over the years, but throwing objects toward players crosses a different line because of the potential for someone to be injured.
The scene also comes at a time when fan behavior at college football games remains under significant scrutiny. Similar incidents involving objects being thrown onto the field have previously resulted in conference discipline and increased security measures.
Georgia leaves Tuscaloosa with huge rivalry win
Despite the chaotic finish, Georgia was able to complete the job on the field. The Bulldogs rallied from a 14-10 halftime deficit and eventually pulled out the three-point victory over Alabama.
The result could have major implications for the SEC and College Football Playoff picture, while the way the game ended is likely to keep the rivalry conversation going well beyond Saturday night.
The postgame incident, however, threatens to overshadow what was an enormous win for Georgia. Regardless of the disappointment surrounding Alabama’s loss, fans throwing objects toward opposing players creates an unnecessary safety concern.
The SEC could now face questions about whether any additional action is necessary following the incident.
