Decatur Central QB Bo Polston will follow Toledo coach to UConn

For almost 1½ years, Bo Polston was set on going to Toledo to play college football.

The Decatur Central senior chose Toledo for a lot of reasons, most notably the continuity and success of the coaching staff at the Mid-American Conference program. In 10 years at Toledo, Jason Candle became the winningest coach in program history.

Decatur Central High School senior Bo Polston (12) shows his emotions as he embraces head coach Kyle Enright after the team’s loss in an IHSAA regional championship football game, Friday, Nov. 14, 2025, at Decatur Central High School. Brownsburg High School won 47-23.

But plans change. Candle accepted at six-year deal to become the new coach at UConn on Saturday. And Polston, after signing with Toledo last week, will instead go to UConn.

“I trust this coaching staff so much,” said, Polston, who finalized his decision on Wednesday. “They took a chance on me when I was just a freshman. The relationships I built with these coaches are unbreakable.”

Polston, a four-year starter at Decatur Central, completed 66% of his passes as a senior for 1,059 yards and 11 touchdowns and ran for 411 yards and six TDs despite missing time with a shoulder injury. For his career, he passed for 6,425 yards and 66 TDs and ran for 1,519 yards and 20 touchdowns, helping the Hawks to a Class 5A state championship as a junior.

Jim Mora Jr. led UConn to three bowl games in his four-year tenure, including back-to-back nine-win seasons, before leaving for Colorado State. UConn was 6-7 and 3-9 in Mora’s first two years before going 18-7 combined in 2024 and ’25.

“UConn football has a lot of momentum,” Polston said. “I’m just extremely blessed to be able to join the rich history of the school. I’m so excited to be in Storrs.”

Polston will enroll at UConn for the school semester starting in January.
