When you hold a team to six first-half points, chances are you win that football game. When you allow a team to score 22 second-half points, that chance to win decreases drastically.
After their Week 3 collapse at Clemson, the North Carolina Tar Heels make their long-awaited return home on Saturday. Next opponent up for UNC? A National Championship contender in the Notre Dame.
If you take away that second half, North Carolina still has a stout defense, allowing 13.7 points per game. The Tar Heels are solid in pass coverage, are much improved at tackling the ball carrier and, in the trenches, few teams match their dominance.
The Fighting Irish have four dominant wins to start their 2026 campaign, highlighted by a 52-0 shutout of Rice in their second game. Notre Dame sports a Heisman Trophy contender in quarterback CJ Carr, two star wide receivers in Micah Gilbert and Jordan Faison, plus a deep rushing attack anchored by Aneyas Williams.
Making matters tougher for the UNC defense? It'll be facing a Fighting Irish offense with one turnover through four games. North Carolina is great at getting to the quarterback, but players will have to break through an offensive line allowing just two sacks.
The Tar Heels previously faced a solid offense in TCU, holding the Horned Frogs to 10 points in Week Zero. UNC faces a much tougher challenge to open October, but it'll be playing in front of a packed house.
Can North Carolina stage another early-season upset and catch the college football world's attention again? Keep reading below for five defensive keys to a Tar Heel victory on Saturday.
Don't collapse with positive momentum
Last time UNC touched the football field, it watched a 14-point lead turned into a 7-point defeat. A large part of this collapse falls on the offense, but North Carolina's defense also looked non-existent during the fourth quarter.
The Tar Heels can't afford any defensive lapses against Notre Dame, which will take full advantage of any lulls. If UNC plays strong defense throughout Saturday's showdown, even if trailing, a victory becomes much more likely.
Make Carr uncomfortble
Notre Dame does a great job at protecting Carr, only allowing two sacks through its first four games. North Carolina has 10 sacks through its first three games, so something has to give on Saturday.
If the Tar Heels find a way to bring Carr down, or simply generate pressure to force him into bad decisions, they can win a shocker.
Continue defending the pass well
Quarterbacks don't get comfortable against UNC, with each opposing starter failing to crack the 300-yard mark. Carr averages 241 passing yards per game, but the Fighting Irish also sport a deadly run game.
If North Carolina can neutralize Carr's effectiveness, whether tipping passes in the secondary or picking him off, a victory is possible.
Don't let the ground game overwhelm you
The Tar Heels struggle against the run, allowing Clemson to total 186 rushing yards on September 19. Notre Dame has 567 rushing yards as a team, with three players totaling multiple touchdowns.
UNC has to pick its poison with Aneyas Williams, Nolan James Jr. or whoever has the football in his hands. If North Carolina can at least neutralize the run, victory becomes much more likely.
Limit Micah Gilbert's big play ability
The Fighting Irish have a tall, big-play wide receiver in Gilbert, who averages 22.3 yards per catch on just 15 receptions. Gilbert hauled in just two passes during Notre Dame's blowout win over Purdue, but totaled 83 receiving yards.
Pass defense is a strength for the Tar Heels, but can they slow Gilbert down? If UNC limits Gilbert's ability to get open, that makes defending the rest of the Fighting Irish's electric offense much easier.
