Deion Sanders admits to major roster building mistake last year

Big 12 Football Media Days wrapped up earlier this week with Colorado head coach Deion Sanders and several players speaking to the media for the first time since the end of spring practices.

Sanders was his typical self, but significantly more upbeat than last year at this time, when he was recovering from bladder cancer surgery. He admitted that last year was a rough period for the program and that he made some major mistakes, particularly in how the Buffaloes would go about replacing his son, Shedeur Sanders, at quarterback.

“I made a big mistake, man,” Sanders told ESPN during the event. “You got to understand it. I’ve coaches my son my whole entire life. So everything was like, campared to that. It’s hard to get.”

The conversation took a different turn, so Sanders did not clarify what he meant, but it was an unusual comment from a head coach. However, the comments do underscore the concerns many had about Sanders’ ability to evaluate talent and inexperience as a coach.

Sanders went on to say that he understands now how valuable the position is, but didn’t grasp that fact until recently.

“That’s why they make the most money in the NFL and college NILs as well,” Deion Sanders said. “But I never had that thought process until a season ago.”

For Colorado fans, that is not what you want to hear from your fourth-year coach, but I suppose it is better late than never to grasp the importance of the quarterback position.

Coach Prime hopes to have the position sorted out this year with redshirt freshman Julian Lewis and transfer Isaac Wilson.
