Deion Sanders delivers candid challenge to his Colorado football team

Colorado football opened its third week of fall camp with Deion Sanders focusing on a topic bigger than just formations or the next opponent.

Sanders spoke to the team on Monday about trust, telling players that talent alone is not enough if coaches and teammates cannot rely on one another. With the Sept. 3 opener at Georgia Tech nearing, his message centered on honesty, accountability and dependability inside the program.

"I can't love what I don't trust," Sanders said. "I can't promote you if I don't trust. I can't get behind you if I don't trust you."

Sanders went on to define trust as confidence in another person's honesty and ability. He said he asked the coaching staff a direct question earlier in the day: "Do your players trust you?"

The timing was not accidental as Colorado held its first full Black vs. Gold scrimmage over the weekend. The staff received a clearer look at a roster reshaped again by the transfer portal. Running back Damian Henderson II and several newcomers reportedly stood out during live work, while the coaching staff continued sorting through offensive line combinations and other position battles.

The next two weeks will likely determine the depth chart for the opening game. Sanders has said camp film will help decide who travels and who earns game-day roles in Atlanta.

Colorado is preparing for a Georgia Tech team that beat the Buffs 27-20 in Boulder last season. Sanders' Monday message was a reminder that execution has to start before kickoff. For a new roster, trust is one of the first things to build.
