It turns out the Colorado Buffaloes might need tighter accounting controls, but head football coach Deion Sanders isn't complaining. USA TODAY Sports reports that Sanders and his staff were overpaid for prior bowl game appearances in consecutive seasons.
The former NFL star received $50,000 more than he should have for Colorado's appearance in the 2024 Alamo Bowl, according to the report. Additionally, assistant coaches and staff were mistakenly paid over $71,000 in that specific Alamo Bowl bonus snafu.
The audit also stated that Sanders received a bonus commensurate with making a "New Year's Six" bowl game, even though the Alamo Bowl isn't one of those contests.
Unfortunately for Colorado and its fiscal team, this wasn't the first time something like this happened. Sanders also received $250,000 in 2023 for a "discretionary bonus" that wasn't actually written into his contract.

Colorado communicated to USA TODAY via statement, saying that they would do better.
“We are committed to implementing all of the suggestions outlined in the audit starting this August as we provided in our management response, in order to make our procedures for football postseason play more efficient and transparent, while also working with various campus offices to ensure compliance and proper oversight.”
