Oregon spent three years holding the ultimate head-to-head record over Deion Sanders. However, one stunning afternoon in Stillwater was enough for college football fans to drag that receipt back out and turn it against Dan Lanning.

CFB Fans Turn Oregon Loss into Deion Sanders Debate

No. 6 Oregon was a 23.5-point favorite against Oklahoma State, but the Ducks lost 39-31 to a Cowboys team that had dropped 21 straight games against FBS opponents. The upset immediately revived the Lanning-Sanders comparisons that have followed both coaches since their 2023 meeting.

Lanning’s history with Sanders made the jokes almost automatic. Oregon crushed Colorado 42-6 in 2023, and Lanning’s “clicks” versus “wins” pregame message became one of the defining clips of Sanders’ first season in Boulder. PFN’sgame recap detailed just how thoroughly Oregon controlled that afternoon.

After Saturday’s loss, one fanwrote bluntly, “Dan Lanning biggest career win is beating Deion lmao.” Another fan added, “Dan Lanning getting fired before Deion.”

The mockery kept circling back to that old “clicks” line. One userjoked, “Coach Prime seeing Dan Lanning get the belt today 😂 😂 Oregon got beat for clicks 😂 Deion Sanders enjoying the moment 😂.”

Oklahoma State gave the internet plenty of ammunition. Drew Mestemaker threw for 317 yards and accounted for 3 touchdowns, while the Cowboys piled up 554 total yards and snapped their long FBS losing streak despite entering as massive underdogs.

Some reactions went beyond jokes and made the comparison directly. One fanargued, “Deion lowkey a better coach than Lanning. Dude took Colorado out of the slums and he’s working Oregon back into em.”

Anotherfan wrote, “Lanning is Deion with more resources. All flash no heart no grit.”

Oregon entered 2026 with another loaded roster and one of the country’s highest-rated quarterbacks. PFN’s current CFB QB rankings place Dante Moore No. 2 after he posted an 85.9 QB Impact Score in 2025.

The comparison also needs context. Lanning went 48-8 through his first four seasons at Oregon, reached the College Football Playoff in both 2024 and 2025, and owns the direct 42-6 win over Sanders. Calling him a worse coach because of one September upset is fan reaction, not an objective verdict.

Still, Oregon’s loss made the old Colorado moment fair game again. The Ducks survived Boise State by seven points in Week 1 before losing to an Oklahoma State team coming off a 1-11 season and a season-opening defeat to Tulsa.

For three years, Lanning’s blowout of Sanders was evidence for anyone arguing Oregon had substance behind the flash. On Saturday, the internet decided it was finally time to flip that argument back on him.
