After third-year quarterback Demond Williams Jr. suffered an injury in the Washington Huskies' 41-24 loss to Iowa on Friday night, Jedd Fisch did not sound overly optimistic about his availability for Friday's matchup with Purdue.

"He's a day-to-day situation," the head coach said on Monday. "He's got a rib injury, so we will monitor that each day on where he's at, but don't know more than that, just waiting on imaging, treatment, and what that looks like."

As Fisch was asked more and more about his starting quarterback's availability, especially given backup Elijah Brown's 251-yard, 3-touchdown performance against the Hawkeyes, the Stanford transfer appears in line to make his first start for the Huskies.

"I think right now we're going to proceed with Elijah taking the reps today; Demond can't take any reps today, and we'll go from there. There'd have to be a pretty significant change for anything to change there…He has a significant rib injury that we still have to deal with all sorts of imaging and everything else, so I'm not under the impression that I think he'll be playing this week based upon where he's at physically."

The longer Fisch talked about the injury, the more it sounded like Williams will not be cleared to suit up. When asked if there was any possibility of Williams playing if he were to make a quick recovery, the head coach ruled that out, especially with Washington's bye week following Friday night's game at Purdue.

"I don't envision being in that spot to have to make that decision," Fisch said. "If he is, then we'll talk about it as a staff and see how healthy he is. I don't want setbacks. I don't want a situation where if he barely can make it back, and then we start him, and then we wind up losing him for weeks after that."
