Fernando Mendoza has taken home college football’s most prestigious honor.

The star Indiana football quarterback learned that his name will forever be engraved into college football history on Saturday, Dec. 13 inside Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room in New York City by being named the recipient of the 2025 Heisman Trophy.

He received more votes than Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love for the award. The Miami native is also the first-ever Hoosier to win the award, and the second player in program history to be named a finalist for the annual award given out by the Heisman Trophy Trust.

Here’s everything to know about how Mendoza did in the Heisman race, including the finalists’ stats and the voting results:

Did Fernando Mendoza win the Heisman Trophy in 2025?

Yes, Fernando Mendoza was named the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner on Saturday in New York City. The Indiana quarterback beat out Pavia, Sayin and Love for college football’s highest individual award.

Mendoza has been one of the best quarterbacks this season in the Big Ten and in the country, as he leads the nation with 33 passing touchdowns and ranks fourth among Big Ten quarterbacks in passing yards at 2,980 yards.

In his first season in Bloomington after coming over from Cal via the transfer portal, Mendoza led Indiana to its first undefeated regular season and Big Ten championship game in program history. It was in the Big Ten title game that Mendoza perhaps had his “Heisman Moment” when he connected with Charlie Baker for a 33-yard grab on third-and-6 late in the fourth quarter. That was just one of several impressive plays this season by Mendoza, with another being his game-winning touchdown pass to Omar Cooper Jr. against Penn State with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.

“I would love the opportunity to get the invite to New York, which would be fantastic, but I think it’s just really a testament to the team,” Mendoza said after the Big Ten championship game. “And it’s not a player award. It’s a team award. And I think it just speaks a testament to how much this team has had that never-ending process of learning and getting better, and that has culminated at this point.”
