Dixon breaks Memorial Stadium single-season receiving TDs record

Big plays have come in waves for Illinois throughout the first half of Saturday’s contest against Southern Illinois.

With the game knotted up at seven, Aiden Laughery took matters into his own hands.

The senior running back galloped to the Illini sideline, flanked by multiple SIU defenders. Somehow, someway, though, he managed to go 77 yards without being touched.

After the Illini defense forced a stop on the ensuing drive, a familiar connection showed up once again for the orange and blue.

To no surprise for many Illini fans, that duo was Katin Houser and Collin Dixon.

I’ll go on record and say it was easily the best of their six touchdown connections this year, and probably the most impressive throw of Houser’s short stint at Illinois.

Houser, with incoming pressure coming right at him, hurled a bomb that perfectly led Dixon right into the end zone.

The receiving touchdown for Dixon moved him into a tie for most receiving touchdowns at Memorial Stadium in a single season — oh, and ya, it’s only week three.

But I don’t think Dixon just wanted to tie for first. Because with just under 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter, he got another.

It was almost in the exact same spot in the end zone as his first touchdown today—just to the side of the front left pylon.

It’s getting unreal at this point. I’ve never seen an Illini QB-WR connection quite like this one.

Clearly, a lot of these touchdowns have come against inferior teams, but I’m really excited to see what the pair does in the bulk of Big Ten play.
