Auburn athletic director John Cohen is searching far and wide for the next head coach of Auburn football. However, one candidate has a great advantage over the others.

Auburn interim head coach DJ Durkin has expressed his interest in having the interim tag removed from his job title and has the support of several current players and recruits. Durkin is thankful for the opportunity to audition for the open job and plans to use this situation as a way to gain an advantage over other candidates.

“I view every day here on the job as an interview. I think you’re getting a good glimpse of what I would be as a head coach here, so I just treat it that way,” Durkin said Monday. “Certainly, there’s conversations almost daily with our administration about a lot of things in the program. So that’s how it is. Our focus is solely on this team right now and preparing for a game this week, and that’s it. Those things I think will play out and handle themselves.”

Cohen has also shared publicly that Durkin is a quality candidate for the job, citing his energy and his experience under notable head coaches, including Urban Meyer and Jim Harbaugh, give Durkin a quality resume.

“We’ve been watching (Durkin) coach for several years now, so I have a real familiarity with his style, with his energy, with his sense of discipline, his preparation,” Cohen said. “We feel very comfortable with DJ Durkin and his lineage, the great head coaches he’s worked for in the past. We think DJ is somebody who’s very worthy of consideration here.”

Auburn football continues its coaching search, with the hope of announcing the next head coach after the conclusion of the Iron Bowl on Nov. 29. One candidate is off the board, as former Penn State head coach James Franklin has agreed to become the next head coach of Virginia Tech football. Durkin, as well as other candidates, including Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall and Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz, remain key names to watch as the search continues.
