The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to have painted themselves into a corner with their quarterback situation. They’ve been waiting on Aaron Rodgers to re-up for essentially the entire offseason up to this point, but CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson is hearing that Mike McCarthy and other Steelers decision-makers have taken a liking to a certain signal-caller in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft.

“Steelers fans get very angry when you give them a quarterback, because Aaron Rodgers apparently is gonna play forever,” Wilson said recently on CBS Sports HQ. “They wanna see what Will Howard can do. Will Howard was a sixth-round pick, so typically if your name isn’t Tom Brady, sixth-round picks don’t work out long-term.

“But I do know the Steelers like Ty Simpson, and the question becomes, ‘Will they take him at 21?’ Because I don’t think he will be there when they get back on the clock in Round 2.”

NFL.com lists Simpson as having a 6.30 prospect grade, meaning he “will eventually be (a) plus starter.” He threw for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns and five interceptions for Alabama last season, along with rushing for another two scores.

“Here’s the thing, he didn’t play well in the second half of the season, and you know as well as I do, he was banged up,” Wilson said. “When he is healthy, he can absolutely sling it. … In terms of short and intermediate passes — within 30 yards of the line of scrimmage — he was clinical.”
