Dolphins trade receiver Tutu Atwell back to Rams for running back

Tutu Atwell’s South Florida homecoming is over before his first regular season game with the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins are trading Atwell, the veteran wide receiver, to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for running back Jarquez Hunter, according to a league source Thursday afternoon.

Atwell, the 5-foot-9, 165-pound speedster, is reunited with the team he spent his first five NFL seasons with.

Atwell is a hometown hero from his high school days as a quarterback for Miami Northwestern High, leading the storied football program back to a state championship as a senior after a down stretch of seasons.

His training camp with the Dolphins, though, left much to be desired, as he was largely unproductive in practices, had multiple dropped passes and struggled to rise beyond the second unit.

The Dolphins have a trio of promising rookie wide receivers in Caleb Douglas, Chris Bell and Kevin Coleman Jr. Bell was activated within the last two weeks as he has recovered from his offseason knee rehab.

Additionally, Miami has third-year slot receiver Malik Washington as a reliable target and veteran Jalen Tolbert, whom the team signed as a free agent from the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.
Atwell, a Louisville alum, was also a free agent pickup in March who was expected to see playing time in a receiving corps that didn’t have many options before the draft and after trading away Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos.

Hunter was a fourth-round pick out of Auburn for the Rams in 2025.

The 5-10, 211-pound tailback played in five games last season but didn’t play an offensive snap, logging 22 special teams snaps in those appearances.

Hunter could figure to play in the Dolphins’ preseason finale Friday night against the Atlanta Falcons. Miami has a running back group led by Pro Bowl selection De’Von Achane, with Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon II behind him.
