R&B fans could have another major catalog battle to debate, with veteran singers Donell Jones and Joe reportedly preparing to face each other in the next Verzuz matchup.
Jones revealed the news while speaking backstage at the Wine & Slow Jams Festival in Maryland on Aug. 8. During the conversation, he said the two singers have a matchup planned for Aug. 20.
The event has not yet been officially confirmed by Verzuz or its partners. In fact, Complex appeared to be caught off guard by Jones’ revelation, responding to the announcement on X with, “y’all know something we don’t???” The reaction added another layer of uncertainty around the date.
According to iHeart’s report, Jones doesn’t view the proposed encounter as a traditional musical battle built around competition or confrontation. Instead, he described it as a celebration of two established R&B careers.
“We grown a— men,” Jones said, emphasizing that both performers have substantial catalogs and that the evening should be treated accordingly.
If it happens, the matchup would bring together two singers whose biggest records helped define late-1990s and 2000s R&B. Jones is best known for songs including “U Know What’s Up,” “Where I Wanna Be” and his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Knocks Me Off My Feet.”
Joe, meanwhile, built his reputation with records such as “I Wanna Know,” “Don’t Wanna Be a Player” and “Stutter,” along with a long list of collaborations.
The possibility of the pairing has already generated conversation among R&B fans online. Discussion on Reddit following the report showed plenty of debate over which singer has the stronger catalog, with some fans arguing for Joe while others pointed to Jones’ classic material.
