Don’t Sell Your WVU Stock Yet

It was another frustrating loss for the West Virginia football program on Saturday night. Through two-and-a-half quarters it felt like Mountaineer football was finally back after a long slumber. Unfortunately, for the remaining quarter-and-a-half it ended in an all to familiar way with the Oklahoma State Cowboys winning 41-24.

It was another loss that could have been avoided yet too many of the same issues that have plagued this program since 2019 reared their ugly head. Stagnant drives, defensive miscues, costly turnovers, huge swings of momentum against you, etc. all of these things plagued the Mountaineers on a beautiful fall night in Morgantown.

However, it is not all doom and gloom. The Mountaineers are 3-1, not 1-3. They still have a chance for bowl eligibility and more. They have pieces and players that can make other teams sweat. It’s not time to throw in the towel.

I believe this because I was in attendance at Milan Puskar Stadium Saturday night for the first time since I was a student. Nostalgia hit me hard. I was excited to once again tailgate in Blue Lot, but I was most excited to see if Milan Puskar was going to be filled to the brink with gold.

To my delight it was. That was one of the most packed crowds I ever experienced. I don’t know how it sounded on TV or on the radio but it was LOUD. The atmosphere was electric and it truly felt like Mountaineer football is back.

Maybe because I was there in attendance, but being apart of that crowd is the reason I am so bullish on the future and direction of this program. I can’t remember a crowd or experience coming close to that when I was a student. It felt special.

I don’t believe we would have gotten a crowd that electric three years ago, two years ago, or even last year. I think the reason for that is that we as fans can see things turning around and heading into the right direction. We want a football team we can be proud of, and up until this past week we were proud of them. We can’t simply sell all our stock we have with this team after a loss to a good Oklahoma State team.

Take it from me. My freshman year was 2018. That to this day is still the best season I had as a student. I finished up school in 2023. Here are the records the football program finished with during my time as a student: 8-4, 5-7, 6-4 (Covid year), 6-7, 5-7. That’s a 30-29 record and a .501 win percentage. I didn’t even get to experience a SINGLE Backyard Brawl win or the 9-4 season in ‘23 as a student. Don’t even get me started on the basketball program and all the highs (not a lot) and lowest of the lows (there’s a lot) I went through as a student.

My point is I, and every Mountaineer who was a student during this era has every right to be upset, pessimistic, apathetic, etc. at this program. We were dealt a bad hand. In addition to being a diehard WVU fan, I am a born and raised Philadelphia Sports fan. Pessimism is in my blood. If I am here telling you that the sky is not falling with this team maybe, just maybe, we can see that there are more positives than negatives with this current iteration of the team.

“You might want to put a little extra tape on. You might want to lace those shoes up a little tighter. Maybe, put just a little more air in that helmet because West Virginia is getting ready to hold the rope, spot the ball and be West Virginia football.”

We got eight more games to go in the regular season. The story of the 2026 Mountaineer football team is still yet to be written. Let’s make sure its the start of a new era, eh? I’m tired of this past one.
