Drew Mehringer, Chris Hampton promoted to lead coordinators for Oregon

With the departures of both of its lead offensive and defensive coordinators, Oregon football opted to promote from within rather than hire from outside the program.

Drew Mehringer has been named the Ducks' offensive coordinator after serving as co-OC and tight ends coach for the first four seasons of Dan Lanning's tenure in Eugene. Chris Hampton, who just completed his third season as Oregon's secondary coach and co-DC, has been selected to defensive coordinator.

The pair were promoted to replace Will Stein, Oregon's former OC who left to take the head coach position at Kentucky, and Tosh Lupoi, who served as defensive coordinator and left to lead California.

"Chris and Drew have been tremendous coaches and leaders since joining our program and are more than deserving of taking these next steps in their careers," Lanning said in a statement. "They have each done an unbelievable job of helping our student-athletes excel both on and off the field. We are thrilled to be able to promote them to our coordinator roles and maintain the momentum we have created as a program and a coaching staff."

Since Hampton arrived in 2023, Oregon is seventh nationally in scoring defense (17.9 points per game) and eighth in passing defense (185.9 yards per game) while holding opponents to a 56.6% completion percentage, good for 10th in the country.

Chris Hampton, right, has been named Oregon football's new defensive coordinator. Hampton just completed his third season with the Ducks.

Before Oregon, Hampton was the defensive coordinator at Tulane for two seasons.

Mehringer also has playcalling experience, serving as the offensive coordinator at Rutgers in 2016, then bouncing around different opportunities at Texas, Florida Atlantic and New Mexico before joining Lanning's first staff in 2022.

Mehringer helped develop second-round pick Terrance Ferguson to historic success and most recently coached Kenyon Sadiq, another tight end who will likely be a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

Drew Mehringer will be Oregon football's offensive coordinator after previously sharing coordinator duties and serving as tight ends coach with the Ducks.
