Unfreaking believable – Duke knocks off Virginia 27-20 in overtime to win the ACC Championship.
Redshirt sophomore Luke Mergott, who was well down the depth chart was forced to step up due to injuries and when Virginia tried a trick play in overtime, he stepped in front of the Virginia receiver to ice the win for the Blue Devils.
What a moment for Duke football. Although Duke shared the ACC title in 1989 under Steve Spurrier, the last time the Blue Devils won the ACC championship outright was 1962.
Not too long ago, the school considered dropping the sport entirely before realizing that in the modern era, you had to compete in football to keep your place at the table. After that decision, David Cutcliffe built the foundations of a successful program, Mike Elko kept things going in the right direction and now Manny Diaz has done a tremendous job.
We’re sure that getting fired by Miami, his hometown school, hurt, and Duke may not have been the place where anyone expected him to revive his career, but it is and he sure has.
It’s an amazing night for Duke, for Diaz and for all Duke football fans. We’d like to pay special tribute to those fans who kept the faith during the dark years. We’re talking about guys like Buddy Womble, Jersey Mike, Stray Gator, Ann Ferrell, our Bob Green and others who supported the team when it wasn’t easy to do. As exciting as it is for the team and the students on campus today, fans like that should be remembered because those are the best sort of fans.
We wouldn’t necessarily put this over beating UNLV in the Final Four in 1991, but is this one of the great sports days in Duke history? It absolutely is.
ACC Champs!!
Bob will have his report soon.
