Duke's No. 3 WR Cooper Barkate Commits to Miami Hurricanes After Successful Season

The 2026 college football transfer portal remains open for those who entered it earlier in January, but this year’s cycle is virtually over.

After putting together a season that saw them reach the College Football Playoff National Championship game, the Miami Hurricanes couldn’t focus heavily on the portal before their season ended on Jan. 19, adding only 12 players while watching 19 leave the program.

Following their runner-up finish in the 2025 CFP and facing serious questions at both the quarterback and wide receiver positions, it took Miami until the 11th hour to land stars to fill those gaps. But that’s what the Hurricanes did on Tuesday.

The Duke Blue Devils finalized a settlement with their transfer-portal-bound quarterback Darian Mensah, clearing the way for his commitment and enrollment at Miami, and the news was followed by that of a former teammate joining Mensah in Coral Gables.

Former Duke wideout Cooper Barkate, the No. 3 wide receiver in On3’s transfer rankings, committed to Miami after visiting The U with Mensah earlier in the day, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

The former Duke star reunites with his quarterback after the pair helped the Blue Devils win their first outright ACC title since 1962 — Duke was co-champion along with Virginia in 1989 — and arrives in Miami with one year of eligibility left.

Mensah led the ACC in both yards (3,973) and touchdowns (34) last season and will take over a Hurricanes offense looking to replace departing QB Carson Beck.

Barkate, meanwhile, had 72 catches for 1,106 yards and seven touchdowns in 2025 at Duke. He was named second team All-ACC and posted the second-most receiving yards in the conference behind Miami’s own WR Malachi Toney.

Originally a three-star recruit from Mater Dei in California, Barkate began his career at Harvard. Across three years, he totaled 1,742 yards and 14 touchdowns before transferring to Duke for his breakout 2025 campaign.

Barkate joins a stacked receiver room that includes transfers Vandrevius Jacobs (South Carolina Gamecocks) and Cam Vaughn (West Virginia Mountaineers), along with rising star Toney.

Barkate will likely be among the first options for Mensah again, just as he was last season when the duo helped Duke average nearly 35 points per game.

The Hurricanes are scheduled to host the Blue Devils on Nov. 14 in ACC play.
