East Carolina reportedly names Week 1 starting quarterback vs. Alabama

According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, the East Carolina Pirates are reportedly set to start Mitch Griffis at quarterback in Week 1 against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Griffis will not be the only quarterback to see action against Alabama though, according to Thamel, as East Carolina will also reportedly play Emory Williams in Week 1. Williams is an offseason transfer from Miami who served as the Hurricanes' backup a year ago.

A sixth-year senior, Griffis transferred to East Carolina during the offseason following a year at Texas Tech where he served as the Red Raiders' backup quarterback. Over his collegiate career, Griffis has appeared in 30 games dating back to the 2020 season between Wake Forest and Texas Tech, completing 61.2% of passes for 2,314 yards and a 17:8 TD:INT ratio.

Last season at Texas Tech, Griffis saw action in seven games where he completed 26-of-36 passes for 357 yards and two touchdowns.

Alabama-East Carolina is set to kickoff at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, Sept. 5. The game will be televised on ABC.
