Memphis football suffered its third loss in its last five games at the hands of East Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 15.

Following the 31-27 loss to the Pirates at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina, ECU's social media team poked some fun at the Tigers about the win — while also taking a jab at FedEx, which is headquartered in Memphis but also has sponsorships in the Tigers' end zones at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

Following a 6-0 start to the season, Memphis was seen as a favorite to win the American Conference and earn a berth in the 12-team College Football Playoff. Indeed, the Tigers, despite not being ranked in the opening CFP top 25, were tabbed as the highest non-Power Four team after Week 10, and were therefore slated to the No. 12 seed of CFP projections.

However, the Tigers have lost three of their last five games, with defeats to UAB on Oct. 18; Tulane on Nov. 7; and, of course, ECU on Nov. 15. With five teams ahead of them in the American Conference rankings, the Tigers are virtually eliminated from contention for the conference title race.

Memphis quarterback Brendon Lewis finished the game completing 32 of 43 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown to one interception, while running back Sutton Smith rushed seven times for 109 yards and an 84-yard touchdown. Cortez Braham Jr. led Memphis with nine receptions for 79 yards, while Matt Addock had the team's lone receiving score.

The latest loss was a heartbreaker, as Katin Houser's touchdown pass to Payton Mangrum came with just 68 seconds left in the game, as the Pirates rallied for the victory.
