The LSU Tigers have had their fair share of coaches who have never failed to generate headlines off the field, and now one former head coach just took a shot at the most recent disgraced head man, creating even more drama.
In a recent appearance on Barstool Sports' "Pardon My Take" podcast, former Tigers head coach and recently appointed assistant coach Ed Orgeron was asked about the infamous clip of Kelly speaking in a fake southern accent at the halftime of a men's basketball game right after being hired.
"It's over, [Kelly] ain't got a chance," Orgeron thought upon seeing that for the first time. "Not only do fans see it, the players see that… players got to trust you. You got to be who you are. If you try to be somebody you ain't, they gonna smell it right away."
One of the things had led Orgeron to so much success is how much he connected to the fan base. A lot of the Cajun men in the fanbase felt like him, while pretty much everyone knew someone like him. It helped him win a lot of people over. Kelly was the opposite and it was proven true right away.
It is a moment that had the doubters out in full force from the start of the Kelly tenure. People were quickly proven right about his reputation as being more "fake."
Over Kelly's three-and-a-half years at the helm of the LSU program, the went 34-14. He had two 10 win seasons and won nine games in 2024. While it's not the level of success that the Tigers holds themselves to, with no playoff appearances, it's not the worst anyone has ever performed.
With the struggles on the field adding up, though, there weren't that many people there to fight for Kelly's job. All reports since he was fired have pointed to contention and disorganization inside of the building. It makes all the sense in the world that they would just start over, because it felt like it was already over internally.
While the moment on the court didn't end Kelly's career in Baton Rouge, Orgeron is right that it was already spelling the beginning of the end. That type of person is not going to succeed in Baton Rouge, because the fans will not hesitate to drive someone out if they do not like him.
Now it's Lane Kiffin's turn to see if he could have more success as an outsider, similar to Nick Saban or Les Miles. He has an interesting strategy so far, bringing Orgeron back into the program has already won him a lot of goodwill within the fanbase.
