Elite LSU football recruit reveals commitment date

Five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews will announce his commitment on Friday, per Rivals’ Hayes Fawcett. The South Florida native will choose between LSU, Miami, Texas A&M, and Georgia.

Matthews is the No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2027 class on both 247Sports and Rivals. Rivals’ recruiting prediction machine gives Texas A&M a 95.4% chance of landing the 6-6, 300-pound offensive tackle, while 247Sports leans toward Miami.

247Sports’ player comparison for Matthews is former Iowa offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs. Here’s what their scouting director, Andrew Ivins, has to say about Matthews as a prospect:

“Athletic offensive tackle with the quickness and mobility to eventually man the hot corner at the game’s highest levels… Still far from a complete product after starting prep career off as a defensive lineman, but has put extremely encouraging stretches on tape while facing stiff competition… Likely to face an initial adjustment period, but projects as a multi-year starter for a College Football Playoff contender with early-round of the NFL Draft upside,” Ivins wrote.

LSU’s chances of landing the top recruit don’t look great based on Rivals and 247Sports’ predictions, but you never know. Given how Lane Kiffin was able to leverage LSU’s funding during the transfer portal window, it’s hard to count the Tigers out.
