ESPN breaks down Clemson’s quarterback room ahead of 2026

Clemson is entering a season without a former No. 1-ranked high school quarterback in line to run the offense for the first time since 2017. Instead of chasing a proven transfer or elite five-star, the Tigers are sticking with a quarterback room built almost entirely through recruiting and development.

That approach centers on Christopher Vizzina, a former four-star prospect and the No. 6 quarterback in the 2023 class. After spending three seasons behind Cade Klubnik, Vizzina is now positioned for his opportunity. He showed flashes last fall, most notably in his first career start against SMU, where he threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.

Depth behind him comes from within the program. Redshirt freshman Chris Denson saw limited action late last season but completed all four of his pass attempts, including a touchdown, against Furman. Trent Pearman, a rising redshirt senior and former walk-on, adds experience after attempting ten passes over three seasons.

Clemson also added two quarterbacks through recruiting, signing four-star dual-threat Tait Reynolds and three-star Brock Bradley.

As part of its offseason quarterback projections, ESPN pointed to Clemson’s continued reliance on players it has developed rather than the transfer portal.

“Coach Dabo Swinney is warming up to the transfer portal but not yet at quarterback, where Clemson once again will turn to a player it recruited and developed,” ESPN said. “Vizzina came to Clemson at the No. 42 overall player in the 2023 class but has waited three years behind Cade Klubnik to get his opportunity. He showed promise last fall in his first career start against SMU, passing for 317 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions… The Tigers appear to be all-in on Vizzina, even though a transfer with some experience could seemingly help.”

For now, Clemson is comfortable moving forward with a familiar plan at quarterback, trusting development over disruption as it turns the page to the next era.
