ESPN FPI projects Oregon’s record, Big Ten title, CFP chances

Algorithms and math only tell part of the story when examining one football team against another, because everything will ultimately be settled on the field. Still, ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) can be a useful tool to predict future outcomes based on talent, simulations and strengths.
Based on the FPI, the Oregon Ducks are one of the favorites to win the national championship. Not only are the Ducks bringing back key pieces on both sides of the ball like Dante Moore and Matayo Uiagalelei, but Oregon has a schedule in place that could set it up for a favorable route through the College Football Playoff.
Still, it won’t be easy to get there. It all has to be played out on the field. The FPI has high hopes for the Ducks this season, but the numbers highlight one big game late in the season that could flip all of the projections in their favor. Let’s look at what the FPI thinks the Ducks will do in the 2026-27 season.
Oregon Ducks Record Prediction, per ESPN FPI
ESPN’s FPI projects Oregon to win 10.2 games and lose 2.3, the fifth-best record prediction in the country. Texas Tech and Notre Dame take the top two spots while playing lesser competition, while Miami and Ohio State sit just in front of the Ducks.
Oregon Ducks Big Ten Title Prediction, Per ESPN FPI
A common theme throughout the FPI rankings is that Oregon is just a step behind Ohio State. The Ducks have a 24.2% chance to win the Big Ten, while the Buckeyes are the favorites with a 38.8% chance. The Ducks and Buckeyes will get a chance to settle it on the field this season in Columbus, and the result of that game could go a long way in determining who goes to the Big Ten Championship and who stays home, in turn, losing out on a chance at the top seed in the College Football Playoff.
Oregon Ducks College Football Playoff Chances, Per ESPN FPI
Speaking of the playoff, the Ducks have a 64.7% chance to make the 12-team field, fourth-best in the nation. That shouldn’t be a surprise given Oregon’s run to the semifinals a season ago and the amount of production that is returning. Where the Ducks place, however, is up for discussion. Oregon has tough road trips to USC and Ohio State while hosting Michigan and Washington to end the season.
The Ducks could probably afford a loss or two, as the FPI projects, but any more could put Oregon in a dangerous position. A brutal stretch in the final month of the regular season will test the Ducks.
Oregon Ducks National Championship Chances, Per ESPN FPI
FPI also predicts the Ducks have a 17.7% chance to make it to the national championship game in Las Vegas, and a 9.8% chance to win it all, which are the fourth-best odds in the country. That all depends on where the Ducks have to play during the playoffs. They could get a bye, host, or hit the road in the first round, and where they have to travel for bowl games.
Last season’s travel plans for the playoffs weren’t too kind to the Ducks. Oregon made a pair of cross-country trips in just over a week’s time, traveling to Miami for the Orange Bowl and Atlanta for the Peach Bowl. This season, Oregon has better options in the quarterfinal round, with the Fiesta Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Cotton Bowl all in the mix with the Peach Bowl. In the semifinals, however, it would be a long trip to either the Orange Bowl or the Sugar Bowl (New Orleans).
The FPI is a predictive tool, and the Ducks have to be inspired by what some of the math thinks they are capable of this season. The numbers will change throughout the season, and it could be for Oregon’s benefit if the Ducks take down Ohio State in November.
