Bill Belichick will be taking a brief break from trying to right the North Carolina Tar Heels‘ ship. The legendary head coach will take a seat in front of the cameras as an analyst during the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Monday night.

“BREAKING: Bill Belichick is joining ESPN’s coverage of the CFP National Championship,” Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy wrote Friday on X. “Chapel Bill (will) be a guest analyst for ACC Network’s on-site coverage.”

Belichick’s first year in charge of North Carolina didn’t go as he’d hoped. After taking a year off from coaching, he returned to take over a college program for the first time, and the campaign began with a blowout home loss to TCU on the way to a 2-5 start. The Tar Heels lost final three outings, as well. Belichick will bring his coaching expertise to a panel during the final — and most important — matchup of the college football season.

Mario Cristobal has guided the Miami Hurricanes to the title game to take on Curt Cignetti’s Indiana Hoosiers, who are seeking an undefeated season to cap one of the biggest turnarounds in sports history. The Hoosiers have Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza leading their charge, while Miami has Carson Beck operating their offense.

According to 247Sports, Belichick and the Tar Heels have the No. 17-ranked group of recruits in the 2026 class. North Carolina has 39 commits, sitting behind the Florida Gators (No. 16) and in front of the Texas Tech Red Raiders (No. 18).
