ESPN mistakenly uses reverse image highlight of Oregon-Oklahoma St upset

Just one week after narrowly defeating Boise State, the No. 6 Oregon Ducks were stunned on Saturday afternoon, falling 39–31 to the unranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. The top-10 upset happened in no small part due to the Ducks’ inability to contain Cowboys quarterback Drew Mestemaker.

Mestemaker finished the game with 317 yards through the air and two touchdowns, going 26-for-43 passing with two interceptions, and added another 109 yards and a touchdown on the ground with six carries.

Mestemaker was so dominant, in fact, that he may have broken ESPN.

While covering the upset as it was still brewing during the ESPN on ABC halftime broadcast of the Alabama-Kentucky game, the network showed a reverse-image highlight of Mestemaker’s 52-yard touchdown pass to Wyatt Young in the second quarter, resulting in the right-handed Mestemaker appearing to fling the ball left-handed.

As noted by On3’s Brett McMurphy, the bizarre mistake, which also featured a mirror-imaged scoreboard chyron, may have given Mestemaker the bragging rights to being the only quarterback to throw touchdowns with both hands in a top-10 upset.

Mistakes happen in live broadcasting, and thankfully, this one was just about as harmless as they come. The college football season is still young, and Oregon isn’t alone in trying to iron out some of the kinks.
