Clemson may not be generating the same recruiting headlines as some of the nation’s top-ranked classes, but ESPN believes the Tigers have quietly assembled one of the better groups in the 2027 cycle.

In its latest “Commitment Season Tiers,” ESPN grouped programs based on how they performed during the busiest stretch of the recruiting calendar. Clemson landed in Tier 5, a category highlighting schools that have made significant progress without receiving as much national attention as some of the recruiting heavyweights.

According to ESPN’s Eli Lederman, the rankings were designed to recognize which programs capitalized on the recruiting cycle before the start of the season.

“We’re aiming to measure the hottest programs on the recruiting trail, the blue bloods that have put themselves in good positions for signing day and others playing catch-up with the recruiting business window closed and a new season on the horizon,” Lederman wrote.

Clemson has steadily climbed the rankings throughout the summer and now sits No. 13 in ESPN’s team recruiting rankings after adding four-star defensive tackle Seth Tillman earlier this month. The Tigers have secured 25 total commitments in the 2027 class, including 20 since the spring recruiting period began.

Quarterback Kharim Hughley remains the headliner of the class. ESPN ranks the longtime Clemson pledge as the No. 125 overall prospect in the country and the fifth-best dual-threat quarterback in the 2027 cycle. Defensive end Desmond Malpress is right behind him at No. 126 nationally, giving the Tigers a pair of top-130 prospects to build around.

Lederman also pointed to Clemson’s recent additions on both sides of the ball as a reason the class could continue to rise.

“Highly regarded quarterback commit Kharim Hughley (No. 126 overall), committed to the Tigers for more than a year, remains the program’s top-ranked 2027 pledge.

“But Clemson added offensive talent around ESPN’s No. 5 dual-threat passer in recent months with pledges from four-star wide receiver Jamarin Simmons (No. 213), running back Gary Walker (No. 232) and offensive tackle J.J. Brown (No. 296). SC Next 300 defenders Desmond Malpress (No. 127), Jayden Aparicio-Bailey (No. 210) and Seth Tillman (No. 223) are among the newcomers to what could become coach Dabo Swinney’s deepest blue-chip class since 2024.”

Clemson’s recruiting work may not be finished, either. Four-star safety Seth Williams is scheduled to announce his college decision on July 31, with the Tigers and Georgia believed to be the finalists. Williams is currently the only remaining uncommitted prospect who still holds a Clemson offer.

The Tigers were joined in Tier 5 by Georgia Tech, Nebraska, Ole Miss and Virginia Tech, while Tier 1 featured Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas and Texas A&M. Clemson’s class also checks in at No. 13 in the latest 247Sports rankings and No. 16 in the Rivals Industry Team Rankings, suggesting the Tigers have quietly put together one of the nation’s stronger recruiting groups heading into the fall.
