ESPN predicts Georgia football's chances of winning the national title

The Georgia Bulldogs have the No. 5 team in ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI). Georgia has the second-best team in the SEC behind the Texas Longhorns.

FPI gives Georgia the best chance (10.9%) to finish the regular season undefeated in the SEC. Texas is the only other SEC team with more than a 5% chance to go undefeated during the regular season. A big reason why Georgia has the best chance to go undefeated is because the Bulldogs have the easiest schedule in the SEC, according to FPI.

Georgia (22.9%) and Texas (29.7%) have the two best chances to win the SEC. No other SEC team has over an 11% chance. The Bulldogs and Longhorns also have the best odds to advance to the national championship. FPI gives Georgia a 17.3% chance to make the national title game and a 9.0% chance to win the national championship. Georgia has the fifth-best chance to win a national championship behind Ohio State, Texas, Notre Dame and Oregon.

What is ESPN’s FPI?

“The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season,” ESPN writes. “FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule.”
