ESPN’s “College GameDay” passes up on USC-Oregon Showdown

On Saturday, USC will host Oregon in a huge clash at the Coliseum. Despite it being early in the year, the game has the potential to be a massive one in both the Big Ten and College Football Playoff races.

Given the hype surrounding the matchup, there had been speculation that ESPN’s “College GameDay” could potentially be in attendance. On Sunday, however, ESPN announced that the show will instead be headed to Knoxville, Tennessee for the Volunteers’ game against Texas.

The announcement means that a notable drought will continue. USC last hosted “College GameDay” in 2013, meaning that it has been nearly 13 years since the show last came to campus.

From 2004 through 2013, the Trojans hosted “GameDay” at least once in all but two years—including twice in 2006. However, due to a combination of down years for the program and ESPN placing an increased emphasis on the SEC, “GameDay” has not returned to the Coliseum since USC upset Stanford in 2013.

This time, however, USC fans can actually blame Oregon for it not coming. Had the Ducks not suffered a stunning loss to Oklahoma State two weeks ago, “GameDay” may very well be headed to Los Angeles this week. Instead, however, the drought will continue for the time being.

If USC wins its next few games, “College GameDay” could potentially come for the Ohio State game next month. First, however, the Trojans must worry about finally beating Oregon this week.
