Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate returns to Atlanta on Friday, and ESPN’s Rece Davis is siding with No. 4 Georgia to keep its College Football Playoff hopes intact, although he expects No. 23 Georgia Tech to put up a fight.
On the College GameDay Podcast, Davis and co-host Dan Wetzel broke down the matchup from Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Davis framed the game through Georgia Tech’s recent slide, including last week’s two-score loss to Pittsburgh that likely ended the Yellow Jackets’ ACC Championship hopes.
“Georgia Tech had a devastating loss… They’ll have a chance to sort of stick it to the ‘Dawg’s résumé on Friday afternoon,” Davis said.
Still, when it came time to make his pick, Davis ultimately rolled with Georgia. He predicted a competitive, play-for-pride performance from Georgia Tech, but not enough to match the Bulldogs.
“This feels like a last stand, and a bit of a face-saving type of game for Tech,” Davis said. “They’re not going to push Georgia to the brink the way they did last year… I’ll take the ‘Dawgs to win that one.”
Wetzel shared the same conclusion, calling Georgia Tech “dangerous” in rivalry settings but pointing to a month of uneven play that included losses to NC State, Boston College, and Pitt as reason to stick with Georgia.
“You got to take Georgia… Georgia Tech has just not been good lately,” Wetzel said. “I think it’s going to be a good game, though.”
Both analysts expect the Yellow Jackets to come out energized in the rivalry atmosphere, but neither sees a scenario where Georgia lets its postseason aspirations slip away.
Kickoff between the two rivals is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on Friday. The game will air on ABC.
