The Oklahoma Sooners enter the 2026 season looking to build on last year's College Football Playoff appearance. Oklahoma returns one of the nation's top defensive units, giving the program a strong foundation entering the season.

However, the Sooners know meaningful improvement on offense starts with a more productive rushing attack. Last season, Oklahoma ranked No. 113 nationally in rushing offense, averaging only 118.5 yards per game. True freshman Tory Blaylock paced the team with 480 yards and four touchdowns, while averaging 4.0 yards per carry. Quarterback John Mateer added 431 yards and eight touchdowns, while Xavier Robinson chipped in 421 yards and four scores.

All three of Oklahoma's leading rushers return for the 2026 campaign. The Sooners also added Colorado State Rams transfer Lloyd Avant and freshmen Jonathan Hatton Jr. and DeZephen Walker to strengthen the backfield. During SEC media days, ESPN analyst Roman Harper explained why he believes Oklahoma's rushing attack could reshape the offense this season.

"I want to see more running back runs, more downhill runs as well," Harper told News 9. "Sometimes I think they maybe need to go to more pistol formation, not just offset running back. Maybe more pistol so I can implement more wide zone runs, get your linemen running, elephants on parade. Then off of that, you can have play actions. Then you can do quick screens to (Isaiah) Sategna."

Oklahoma already has the defensive foundation needed to compete with anyone in the country. The next step is developing a rushing attack capable of controlling games and opening up the passing offense. Harper believes schematic adjustments could help make that happen, and if the Sooners find consistency on the ground, they could become one of the most dangerous teams in college football.
