One of the expected offseason transfer portal moves has now become official. Former Penn State quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer has announced his commitment to Virginia Tech, reuniting with a coaching staff he already knows well. The former Penn State quarterback will follow James Franklin, offensive coordinator Ty Howle, and quarterbacks coach Danny O’Brien to Blacksburg, giving him immediate comfort in a new setting. Grunkemeyer announced his commitment to the Hokieswith a post on social media.

That familiarity matters. Grunkemeyer entered the transfer portal on Jan. 2, and Virginia Tech always felt like the most logical landing spot once Franklin’s new staff began taking shape.

What Grunkemeyer showed at Penn State

Grunkemeyer wasn’t just a placeholder in 2025 — he proved he could win games. Thrust into the starting role after Drew Allar’s injury, he made seven starts as a redshirt freshman and went 4–3, closing the season on a four-game winning streak.

He steadily improved as the year went on, completing just over 69 percent of his passes for 1,339 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions. The poise, accuracy, and decision-making he showed late in the season made it clear he belonged at the Power Four level.

Why the move made sense

The writing was on the wall once Penn State landed former Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht. With Becht arriving as an experienced, multi-year starter, the room became crowded fast.

Rather than fight for snaps in a transitional year, Grunkemeyer chose a path where he has a real chance to start immediately. At Virginia Tech, he steps into a situation built around him — and he won’t be alone.

Former North Carolina four-star freshman Bryce Baker also committed to the Hokies, giving the quarterback room added depth and competition.

Penn State’s quarterback picture moving forward

With Grunkemeyer gone, Becht is the clear frontrunner to start for Penn State Nittany Lions in 2026. Behind him, the Nittany Lions have four-star freshman Alex Manske and incoming high school signees Peyton Falzone and Kase Evans.

Penn State could still explore the transfer portal for an experienced backup, but the hierarchy is far clearer now than it was a month ago.

This wasn’t a messy exit. It was a business decision that worked for everyone. Grunkemeyer gets a legitimate shot to lead a program with coaches who believe in him, and Penn State avoids a crowded quarterback room during a major roster reset.

Sometimes the portal isn’t about failure or being pushed out. Sometimes it’s just timing.

And for Grunkemeyer, the timing finally lined up.
