A new college football season is upon us, and we get to see some fresh faces in some unfamiliar places. One of those fresh faces in a new place is DJ Lagway. He transferred from Florida this offseason and was looking to get a fresh start at Baylor on Saturday.

Lagway’s “fresh start” started off as bad as he could have hoped for with a fumble, which led to an Auburn field goal, and an interception on the first two offensive drives for Baylor. He looked like the Florida version of himself just a season ago, prone to mistakes.

Something to consider about his performance was his sprained ankle early in the game, which completely immobilized him. Nonetheless, his performance was lackluster and many times during the game he missed his receivers and was late on throws. Lagway finished the game completing only 50% of his passes on 54 pass attempts.

At the end of the game, Lagway’s deficient performance showed when he threw a pass behind tight end Matthew Klopfenstein for the go-ahead two-point conversion. All he had to do was lead him a little more with the pass and Baylor would be 1-0.

Lagway did show some upside, specifically on Baylor’s last drive of the game. He hit Jadon Porter on a 27-yard pass to put the Bears in the red zone, which put them in position to score the touchdown to go for two to win the game.

Regardless, the game is over, Baylor is 0-1 and Lagway can’t get out of his own way. His playing status of their next game is unknown.

Should Lagway have left Florida?

That is the question that will begin to circulate if Lagway does not figure it out. In any regard, he needs to figure it out quickly.

Baylor faces off against Prairie View A&M at home on Saturday, September 12 at 8 p.m. ET.
