Everything you need to know about the start of Notre Dame Football’s fall camp

On Thursday, Notre Dame finally took the football field together as a team for the first time since the Blue-Gold Game — and everyone is fired up. While I am always sceptical about taking anything too seriously (at least for what is viewable to the media) there are still a handful of things that stand out to me as “this is probably important.”
So let’s rip those out of the box real quick:
- Jasper Scaife can punt the hell out of a football, and everyone is impressed with the Aussie first year player. Lock it up.
- Ashton Craig, after missing a ton of time and Joe Otting playing really well in his place at center, was still the first center on the field in non-contact drills. Craig is still limited this fall camp, but it feels like he could be closer to seeing the field to start the season than not. According to Mike Denbrock, Craig could be out there to play center OR guard… which is a new development. So if the battle at RG is between Sullivan Absher and Matty Augustine — it may now have a third wheel with Craig.
- CJ Carr is CJ Carr but better. This text from a colleague who was at practice says it all, “CJ is the most alpha of every alpha. He’s like not even an alpha, more than an alpha.”
- We already knew Notre Dame’s secondary was stacked on stacked — but the addition of DJ McKinney to the roster might be a cheat code. Michigan transfer Jayden Sanders ran with the ones at the FC but McKinney is expected to take that role opposite Leonard Moore. The blessings are real.
- Quincy Porter being mostly healthy and Jaden Greathouse being actually healthy is a huge win for the offense. The WR room is talented, and there are a lot of players that could see time at a number of spots.
- Everyone is keeping an eye on QB2 and personally… I love a position battle where there is a clear path for the deciders. QB2 isn’t QB1, and generally it can be done better — but also still leave room for change down the road.
And they’re just getting started.
I’ll have much more over the coming days concerning the position battles and how the depth chart shakes out, but we just got started. In the words of Adon Shuler, “be where your feet are,” because you can’t get to the future without living through the present.
