Former Big 12 champion Arizona State football quarterback Sam Leavitt is visiting the Miami football program in the transfer portal, per Pete Thamel.
Thamel, an ESPN college football writer and insider, reported that the visit was on Friday, Jan. 9. He mentioned in his report that Leavitt has already visited Kentucky, LSU and Tennessee. Leavitt is rated as a five-star transfer portal prospect and ranked as the No. 1 transfer portal prospect in college football.
Miami does not have a quarterback in its 2026 high school recruiting class rated above three stars. Also, current Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck has no eligibility left after the College Football Playoff national title game on Jan. 19.
Leavitt played in the Peach Bowl last season with ASU, and the Sun Devils finished the season ranked seventh in the AP poll. Leavitt scored 29 total touchdowns (24 passing) that season and threw six interceptions. He averaged 8.2 yards per pass and 4 yards per rush.
This season, Leavitt averaged 4.2 yards per rush but 6.8 yards per pass. He played in seven games in 2025, and the team finished the year 8-5.
"There's a chance other signal callers enter the picture, including Alabama's Ty Simpson," Brad Crawford of CBS Sports reported.
Crawford did write, however, that multiple sources close to Miami's program told CBS Sports that "Leavitt is the primary target for the Hurricanes."
