Ex-college football coach Lou Holtz reportedly entering hospice care

Lou Holtz, the only college football coach to lead six different teams to bowl games, is entering hospice care, according to multiple reports.

Before his head coaching career, Holtz won a national championship with Ohio State as a member of Woody Hayes’ 1968 staff. He went against the Buckeyes six times in his career, winning as a coach for South Carolina twice.

Holtz, 89, had a viral feud with Ohio State coach Ryan Day that started in 2023 when he spoke critically of the Buckeyes ahead of a game against Notre Dame. Holtz coached the Fighting Irish for 10 years and won a national championship in the 1988-89 season.

Holtz doubled-down on his belief that Ohio State wasn’t a great football team after the Buckeyes beat Notre Dame 17-14. Day responded to Holtz’ comments during an on-field interview, saying he felt “disrespected” by what Holtz said.

The feud settled until the national championship game between Ohio State and Notre Dame, where Holtz took another jab at Day on social media ahead of the game.

“If Notre Dame doesn’t win, it’s because we want to preserve Ryan Day’s job,” he wrote on an X post.

He once again said Ohio State was “not a great football team” ahead of the Buckeyes’ first regular-season game against Texas last season.

Holtz was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008. He was a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient in 2020, awarded by President Donald Trump.
