Former Louisville head coach and Arkansas offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino is in talks to be hired to the same position by Bill Belichick at North Carolina, according to multiplereports.
Petrino, who served as the Razorbacks' interim coach for the final seven games of the 2025 college football season, previously expressed interest in becoming the Razorbacks' full-time head coach. He led Arkansas to an 0-7 record to conclude a 2-10 season and 0-8 mark in SEC play.
He sent a thank-you letter to the Razorbacks and their fans on Nov. 26 for getting the opportunity to coach Arkansas again following his 2012 firing.
Despite Arkansas' on-field struggles this year, the Razorbacks featured a top-25 offense that ranked 18th in total offense (454.8 yards per game) and 25th in scoring offense (32.9 points per game). Conversely, North Carolina ranked near the bottom of FBS rankings in the same categories (288.8 ypg and 19.3 ppg, respectively).
Belichick fired former offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens on Dec. 12.
"We want to thank Coach Kitchens and (special teams coach Mark) Priefer for their commitment and many contributions to our program and student-athletes," Belichick said in a school-issued statement.
"We wish them both nothing but the best in their future endeavors."
Belichick's much-anticipated college football debut fell flat, with the Tar Heels going 4-8 after a 2-1 start to the season. They managed to score two late-season wins vs. Syracuse and Stanford before dropping the final three games of the season to Wake Forest, Duke and North Carolina State.
