Kyle Whittingham and his coaching staff have been hard at work building up the Michigan Wolverines‘ 2027 recruiting class. With six commitments, they already rank eighth in the Big Ten and 22nd in the nation.
Among that group is safety Darrell Mattison out of Chicago, Illinois. He committed to the Wolverines on March 24. choosing them over Ole Miss Rebels, Penn State Nittany Lions and Indiana Hoosiers. The defender was one of the first commits Whittingham landed after taking over.
He’s a solid addition for Michigan, standing at 6-foot-0 and weighing 160 pounds. Rivals Industry Rankings list him as a four-star recruit, the No. 31 safety and the No. 340 player in the nation.
He’s also coming off a solid junior season at Morgan Park High School. In 13 games, Mattison accumulated 47 tackles, one tackle for loss, five interceptions, three pass deflections and one fumble recovery.
Despite initially choosing the Wolverines, though, he hasn’t completely shut down his recruiting process. In fact, Mattison even has an official visit scheduled with Ole Miss on June 5.
The Rebels have continued to make a strong impression. On Tuesday, Rivals’ Zach Berry logged an expert prediction for Mattison to flip from Michigan to Ole Miss. Berry has been correct in 76.19% of his 231 predictions.
It would be a major blow for the Wolverines, who have already had trouble keeping players in the 2027 cycle. Mattison could be the third decommitment they suffer, alongside four-star quarterback Peter Bourque and three-star interior offensive lineman Tristan Dare.
His scheduled visit with the Rebels may play a big part in a potential flip. Luckily, Michigan also has the opportunity to get him on campus, hosting the safety on June 12.
